Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, and Dr. Mahmoud Saqr, President of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, inaugurated today Wednesday, December 23, 2020 the Information Center of the United Institute for Nuclear Sciences (Dubna-Russian Federation) at the headquarters of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology, which realized early on the importance of The existence of an information center offers on the Egyptian and regional arena all the opportunities available to researchers in the fields of peaceful applications of nuclear energy, especially with the state’s direction and great interest in catching up with this legacy of science, and coinciding with the ongoing work in full swing with the Dabaa project.
The inauguration was witnessed by representatives of the Institute's member states, associate members and other stakeholders from the Middle East and North Africa region, via live broadcasts, given what the world is going through from the Corona pandemic.
The opening of the center is the culmination of the efforts of the Academy of Scientific Research and Technology to achieve the state's policy towards developing and strengthening Egyptian relations with countries of the world in the field of science and technology, and investing Egypt's international relations in a way that serves development goals.
Regarding the objectives of the center, Dr. Mahmoud Saqr, President of the Academy of Scientific Research stated that this center is the first of its kind in North Africa and the Arab world and aims to introduce young researchers to areas of cooperation with the institute to enhance the utilization of its research structure and its ongoing scientific projects, and to act as a center to coordinate various cooperation mechanisms. With the institute, including future partnerships with industry, in addition to opening a window on available opportunities, training and conferences provided by the institute for those interested in the peaceful applications of nuclear energy in Egypt and the region, and presenting the results of ongoing research at the institute to interested Egyptian and non-Egyptian students and researchers in North Africa and the Arab world Also, channels of cooperation will be activated and created between Egyptian and international bodies and institutions in the entire region, the Institute and others.
And because Egypt has always been a pioneer and pioneer, a number of member states called for the simulation of the Egyptian experience at the United Institute to establish information centers in their countries after the Academy of Scientific Research announced that the first of these centers would be hosted outside Russia, including Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Serbia and South Africa.
It is worth noting that the Academy of Scientific Research joined the United Institute for Nuclear Sciences as an affiliate member in 2009, which allowed Egyptian research centers and universities to participate in the center's international cooperation activities, use its basic equipment and enjoy several advantages, including the travel of young researchers in annual summer and winter scholarships, as well as support for joint projects. And a joint international publication. The Academy of Scientific Research and Technology has worked to ensure that this cooperation provides an opportunity to prepare and train a broad base of young Egyptian researchers in the various disciplines related to the center, as well as conduct research and applications of nuclear safety. It is worth noting that this institute is a multidisciplinary scientific edifice, as it consists of 7 laboratories equipped with research reactors and particle accelerators, as well as many theoretical and practical scientific research centers in the fields of basic sciences and modern scientific applications such as nanotechnology, new materials and peaceful applications of nuclear energy such as ( For example, but not limited to) the use of accelerated protons to treat cancerous tumors in the brain, generate electrical energy from nuclear power reactors and identify materials and elements polluting the environment, and currently each laboratory has a joint project with Egypt, especially after Egypt became a country attached to the member states of the institute. The Egyptian nuclear authorities are currently part of the institute's work team.
Dr. Gina El-Feki, Supervisor of the Academy's Scientific and Cultural Relations Sector, added that the successful cooperation between the two parties dates back to 2009. About 238 Egyptian students from public and private universities and research centers and institutes participated in 11 summer and winter schools to train and qualify them in modern technologies in the field of peaceful nuclear research. To be entrusted with the settlement of nuclear technology in Egypt, in addition to the transfer of reactor engineering, nuclear physics and accelerators, in the framework of preparing them to participate in research projects.
- About 92 joint research projects have been implemented between Egypt and the Institute, 27 workshops, seminars and conferences. 88 faculty members and researchers traveled to the institute to participate in conducting joint research, and 15 professors from the Russian side were hosted. This cooperation also resulted in more than 120 papers published in international journals with high publishing rates, in addition to some young researchers obtaining master's degrees and doctoral scholarships from Germany, England, Japan and the Russian Federation as a result of their participation in one of the joint projects or advanced scientific schools organized through an agreement. Joint cooperation between Egypt - the United Institute for Nuclear Sciences (JINR)
- Among the future plans to make the most of cooperation with the Institute, the Academy agreed to dispatch (2) Egyptian doctoral students annually to the Institute to complete their research for a period of three months under joint supervision between the Egyptian Authority and the United Institute, provided that the Egyptian Authority is the awarding body for the degree. That the United Institute should bear the costs of the materials used for the research activities and the Academy of Scientific Research shall bear the costs of travel and accommodation, and an agreement is currently underway to establish a virtual laboratory that works to provide the opportunity for Egyptian students to conduct virtual experiments in various fields of nuclear physics sciences, in addition to opening channels for the benefit of children of some age Before university education (students of the Children's University Program), to send five students annually to Dubna for training at the United Institute, after their selection based on an evaluation in sister
