It is a Spanish word meaning the child, and sometimes it is called the child Christ, and it was called by that name because it comes in the month of December, which is the period that witnessed the birth of Christ, peace be upon him, and there is another name called it which is the wretched child because of the large number of disasters and destruction caused by this phenomenon.

The El Nino phenomenon is one of the natural climatic phenomena that affect the planet and leads to a sharp and volatile change in climatic conditions, meaning that it creates unusual conditions in the areas affected by this phenomenon. This phenomenon occurs every three years and its occurrence has been linked to natural climatic disasters such as the emergence of large floods in the areas they pass through, droughts and fires in other areas. Most of the areas affected by this phenomenon are the Pacific coasts bordering South and Central America, and these areas are affected by major floods in the years in which this phenomenon appears, and on the other hand, the western coasts of the Pacific Ocean represented in Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia, are experiencing drought and forest fires.

The reason for this phenomenon is related to the warming of the oceans, especially the Pacific Ocean. Its warming is believed to be the result of global warming caused by the emission of carbon dioxide. What is happening here is that the rise in the ocean temperature leads to an increase in evaporation, and this hot water rushes to form currents towards the other coast, and other cold water appears that helps in condensing the water vapor and the frequent evaporation leads to an increase in precipitation more than normal, which leads to the occurrence of floods, In return, evaporation decreases in other coasts, and thus drought controls them, and only fires and destruction occur in them.

As for the Sultanate of Oman, it is less affected by this phenomenon, and the last time it was affected by the Sultanate was in the year 1997 AD, as the Sultanate witnessed in that year heavy rains and as a result many valleys flowed, which were not losses as much as they were a benefit to the country.

As for the return of the El Nino phenomenon, there are expectations that this phenomenon will return to the coming months, according to what was announced by the World Weather Organization (OMM) in Geneva, through indicators of unusual increases in water temperatures, but it will be less effective than its predecessor that occurred in 1997.
